A macerator lets you put a WC, basin or shower where gravity drainage cannot reach — it grinds waste and pumps it through small-bore pipe to the nearest soil connection. It makes otherwise impossible rooms possible, at the cost of a pump to maintain and strict rules about what goes into it.

The principle is simple: a sealed unit sits behind or beside the WC, macerates the waste, and pumps it through 22 or 32mm pipe which can run horizontally over long distances and vertically several metres. That turns a basement, a loft conversion, a garage conversion or a room in the middle of a house into a viable location for a bathroom.
Building Regulations expect a macerator to be a solution where gravity drainage is not practicable, rather than a shortcut where it is. If a conventional gravity connection can be achieved, it should be — it needs no power, makes no noise, never jams and lasts as long as the building. Where it genuinely cannot, a macerator is a perfectly respectable answer, and modern units are far better than their reputation.
Installation quality determines the experience. The discharge pipe should rise vertically first and then run with a slight fall, without dips where solids can settle, and with the number of bends kept to a minimum. It needs an isolating valve and a non-return arrangement, a fused electrical supply, and access to the unit for servicing — which means the boxing has to be removable rather than tiled in permanently.
What goes in decides how long it lasts. Only WC waste and toilet paper: no wipes of any description including those labelled flushable, no sanitary products, no cotton buds, no cleaning cloths, and no thick bleach products sitting in the chamber. Most macerator failures are ingestion failures, and they are entirely preventable.
Noise is worth understanding before committing. The unit runs for perhaps twenty seconds after each flush and is clearly audible in the room and adjacent rooms. Position it with that in mind, particularly where it shares a wall with a bedroom.

Are macerators reliable?
Modern units are, when installed with a sensible pipe route and used correctly. Nearly every failure traces back to wipes and sanitary products, or to a discharge pipe with dips in it.
Can it take a shower and basin as well as the WC?
Many units have side inlets for a basin, shower or bath, provided the flow rate is within their rating. It has to be specified at the outset — an undersized unit fed by a powerful shower will back up.
