The basic set is a programmer for time, a room thermostat for temperature, and TRVs for individual rooms. Plenty of older houses still have a programmer and nothing else, which means the heating runs to a clock regardless of how warm the house already is. Adding a thermostat alone typically pays for itself in a season.
Smart thermostats add scheduling flexibility, remote control and, in some cases, learning behaviour and presence detection. They are genuinely useful for households with irregular routines, and they make it far easier to see what the heating is actually doing. They are not magic: a smart thermostat on an unbalanced system with an oversized boiler still leaves you with an unbalanced system and an oversized boiler.
Weather compensation is the control upgrade that is least sold and most effective. An outside sensor lets the boiler vary its flow temperature with the outdoor conditions — lower on a mild day, higher in a cold snap — which keeps the boiler condensing far more of the time and holds room temperature more steadily. Most modern boilers support it and most installations never enable it.
Zoning matters in larger houses. Separate time and temperature control for upstairs and downstairs, or for a rarely used part of the house, stops you heating rooms nobody is in. Building Regulations require zoning above a certain floor area on new systems, and it is worth doing below that threshold too.
One practical note: controls need to suit the household as well as the house. A beautifully configured multi-zone system that nobody understands ends up overridden to constant, which wastes more than the simple system it replaced. Whoever fits it should set it up with you and leave you able to change it.
