Plumbing in a washing machine or dishwasher is a short job done properly: a dedicated valve on the cold supply, a hose that is not kinked or over-stretched, and a waste connection at the right height so the machine neither siphons nor backs up. The supply side wants its own isolating valve — usually a red or blue-handled appliance valve — so the machine can be shut off without touching anything else, and so the hose can be changed in future without a drain-down. Inlet hoses have a service life, and a perished or over-tightened hose failing at mains pressure while the house is empty is one of the more common causes of a serious escape of water.
The waste connection is where most of the recurring problems come from. Discharging into a trap spigot needs the spigot's blanking plug removing — obvious, but frequently missed — and the hose has to rise to the correct height before falling to the connection, so the machine cannot siphon its water out mid-cycle. A standpipe needs to be the right height with its own trap, and the hose must not be pushed so far down it that it seals against the pipe.
Where a sink, a washing machine and a dishwasher all discharge into one small trap, the result is often water appearing in the sink when the machine drains. It is not a blockage: it is a waste arrangement that cannot take the flow. Splitting the connections or fitting a properly sized trap sorts it permanently.
Modern appliances need level installation and full feet adjustment or they walk across the floor on a spin cycle and put strain on both hose and waste. It takes two minutes and is worth insisting on.
One thing worth doing in any house: turn the appliance valves off when going away for more than a day or two. It costs nothing and removes the most likely cause of coming home to a flooded kitchen.
