Sequencing with the kitchen fitter is what keeps a refit moving. Pipework and waste positions are set out from the plan before any units go in — behind carcasses where possible, with service voids left for access, and with isolation valves positioned so they can actually be reached once the kitchen is built. Pipework buried behind a fixed unit with no access is a decision that will be regretted in five years.
Waste layout is the part that goes wrong most often. Sink wastes need fall to the branch, appliance hoses need connecting to a trap spigot or a standpipe at the right height, and combining two appliances and a sink into one small trap is how kitchens end up with water backing up into the bowl when the dishwasher empties. A properly sized trap and a sensible arrangement solves it permanently.
The cold supply to the kitchen tap must come directly from the mains, because it is the drinking water outlet. That is a requirement rather than a convention, and it is worth checking on older houses where alterations may have left the kitchen fed from a stored supply.
A refit is the natural moment to deal with anything the kitchen has been hiding — a corroded section of pipe behind the units, an old gate valve that no longer closes, a stopcock buried at the back of a cupboard where nobody can reach it in an emergency. All of those cost very little to sort while the room is stripped and a great deal more afterwards.
If a gas hob is part of the kitchen, that connection is Gas Safe work and is done as a separate, registered operation with its own tightness test and paperwork. It is not something a kitchen fitter should be doing along the way.
