Boiling water tap installation in Macclesfield

A boiling water tap needs three things under the sink that a normal tap does not: a heated tank, a switched fused spur, and room in the cupboard. The plumbing is straightforward; the planning is what makes the difference between a neat installation and a cupboard you can no longer use.

The tap itself sits on the sink deck like any other, but it is fed from a small insulated tank below that holds water at just under boiling point. That tank needs a permanent electrical supply — normally a switched fused spur, which is an electrician's job under Part P — and it needs ventilation space and access for future servicing.
Most systems also include a filter cartridge, which is there for taste and to protect the tank. Filters need changing periodically, and the cartridge has to be reachable: an installation crammed behind a waste bin carousel is one you will resent at the first change. Deciding where the tank and filter live is worth as much thought as choosing the tap.
There is a local point in favour of these taps that does not apply everywhere. In hard water areas, boiling tanks scale up and filters work hard. Macclesfield's supply is soft — 45 to 68 mg/l depending on the reservoir zone, well below the threshold at which scale forms — so a boiling tap here has an easier life than the same unit in the south east. The trade-off, which nobody selling you a tap will mention, is that soft water is slightly more corrosive, so the quality of the tank's internals matters more than its scale protection.
Safety is worth a sentence. These taps deliver water at around 98°C. Reputable models have a child-safety mechanism requiring a push-and-turn action, and it should be checked at handover — particularly in a house with young children. The tap should also be positioned so that a small person cannot reach it from a stool at the worktop edge.
Where the same tap also provides normal hot and cold, the installation replaces the existing kitchen tap entirely, so it is a good moment to renew flexible tails and fit isolation valves while everything is out of the cupboard.

Common questions
Do I need a filter?
Most manufacturers require one for the warranty, and it improves taste. Local water is soft, so the filter is doing less work here than in a hard water area, but the change interval is still worth following.
Is it safe with children in the house?
Reputable taps have a push-and-turn child lock, and it should be demonstrated at handover. Positioning matters too — keep it away from the front edge of the worktop.
