The white-cloudy case is the most common and the least alarming. Air entrained in the supply after mains work, a repair or a pressure change makes water look milky, and it clears from the bottom of the glass upwards within a minute as the bubbles rise. Nothing needs doing beyond running the tap gently for a few minutes.
Brown, orange or yellow water is normally iron oxide sediment that has been disturbed in the main — by a burst, by planned work, by a hydrant being used, or by a sudden change in flow direction. It usually clears within a few hours of gentle running. Avoid using hot water or the washing machine while it is discoloured, because sediment drawn into a cylinder or a machine takes far longer to clear than the cold main does.
If it persists, or if it affects only your property while the neighbours are fine, the cause is inside your boundary — an old galvanised iron section corroding internally, a section of pipework disturbed by work, or debris from a repair. That is a plumbing job rather than a supply issue, and it is worth identifying which pipe is shedding.
Two situations call for a phone call rather than patience. Water with a taste, smell or oily appearance should be reported to United Utilities immediately and not used for drinking in the meantime. And in a property built before 1970, concern about lead is answered by testing and, where present, replacing the supply pipe — the local water being soft and mildly plumbosolvent makes that more relevant here than in hard-water regions.
One more local note: black specks are occasionally rubber from a perished washer or a failing flexible hose rather than anything in the supply. It is a small thing that looks alarming and is fixed by replacing the component that is breaking down.
