A waste disposal unit replaces the sink trap assembly with a grinder and its own trap, and needs a switched electrical supply plus room in the cupboard below. Fitted correctly it is trouble-free; fitted onto an existing shallow waste run it is a recurring blockage.

The unit bolts to the sink outlet in place of the standard waste, so the sink must have the correct 90mm outlet — many stainless steel sinks do, most ceramic sinks do not without an adaptor. Below it, the unit is heavy and takes up most of the space where the trap used to be, which is why cupboard clearance is checked before ordering rather than after.
Waste pipework matters more with a disposer than without. Ground food waste is a slurry, and it needs a good fall and a reasonable bore to carry it away. A long, shallow-fall waste run that coped with a normal sink will silt up with a disposer feeding it, and the blockage will be somewhere inconvenient. If the existing run is marginal, it is worth upgrading it at the same time.
Electrically, the unit needs a supply and an isolating switch — usually a switched fused spur above the worktop or an air switch on the sink deck. That is an electrician's connection under Part P.
Usage rules make the difference between one that lasts and one that jams. Run cold water throughout and for a few seconds after. Feed waste in gradually rather than filling the chamber. Keep out fibrous material like celery and artichoke leaves, starchy quantities of potato peel, bones, and above all fats and oils, which set in the pipework downstream and are the single biggest cause of drain blockages nationally.
If your drainage runs to a septic tank, which is common in the villages east of the town where mains drainage is limited, check the tank manufacturer's guidance before fitting a disposer — the extra solids loading can shorten desludging intervals significantly.

Common questions
Will it block my drains?
Not if the waste run has decent fall and you keep fats and fibrous waste out. Poor falls plus cooking oil is what causes blockages — the disposer just delivers the material faster.
My unit hums but does not turn — what is wrong?
It is jammed. Isolate the power, then free the plate with the hex key supplied through the base, or with the wrench through the top. Never put a hand into the chamber.
