Write the code down first. Every modern boiler displays a fault code that maps to a specific system in the appliance, and knowing whether the problem is ignition, flame sensing, overheat, low pressure or fan speed tells the engineer which parts to bring. A boiler that has been reset four times has lost that information.
Some faults have obvious homeowner-side causes worth eliminating: pressure below 1 bar, a programmer that has lost its schedule after a power cut, thermostat batteries, or an isolating valve knocked shut behind the boiler. Ruling those out costs nothing.
Frozen condensate is the classic winter call-out and is genuinely fixable without a visit. Condensing boilers drain acidic condensate through a small plastic pipe, and where it runs outside it can freeze and back up, locking the boiler out on a specific code. Warm water poured over the external section — not boiling — usually clears it within minutes. If it recurs every winter, the pipe should be re-routed internally or upsized, which is a permanent fix rather than an annual ritual.
The two most common component failures on combi boilers are the diverter valve and the plate heat exchanger. A diverter that sticks gives you heating but no hot water, or hot water only when the heating is on. A plate exchanger that has silted up gives you lukewarm hot water and a boiler that short cycles. Both are repairable, and both are usually caused by system water full of magnetite — which is why fitting a filter and cleaning the system is part of a proper repair, not an upsell.
The honest conversation is about when to stop repairing. A boiler over twelve to fifteen years old, with a failure of a major component, obsolete parts, and a poor efficiency reading, is money going into a machine that will fail again. A good engineer will tell you the cost of the repair, the realistic remaining life, and let you decide with the numbers rather than steering you.
Whatever the fault, gas appliance repair is legally restricted work. Anyone opening up a gas boiler must be Gas Safe registered, and you are entitled to see the card.

Common questions
Should I keep resetting the boiler?
No more than once. A lockout is a safety response to a detected condition, and repeatedly resetting it overrides that. Note the code and get it looked at.
How old is too old to repair?
There is no fixed age, but past twelve to fifteen years, with a major component failed and efficiency well down, replacement usually wins on cost over the following few years. You should be given both numbers and left to choose.
