Electric boiler installation in Macclesfield
In short
An electric boiler needs no flue, no gas supply and no annual gas safety check, which makes it a neat fit for flats, extensions and properties with no gas connection. The catch is running cost: electricity costs several times more per unit than gas, so the sums only work in specific circumstances.
Also called: electric combi boiler · electric heating system · boiler without gas · flat electric boiler
The appliance itself is simple — an element heating water in a small vessel, with a pump and controls — and that simplicity is its appeal. No combustion means no flue, no condensate, no ventilation requirements, no carbon monoxide risk and no gas safety obligations. It can sit in a cupboard almost anywhere, and it is quiet.
The electrical requirement is the real constraint. An electric boiler of useful output draws a substantial current and needs its own suitably sized circuit, and in some properties the incoming supply or the consumer unit will not support it without an upgrade. That assessment has to come first, and it is an electrician's judgement.
Running cost is where honesty matters. Per unit of heat, electricity is typically three to four times the price of mains gas. An electric boiler is therefore rarely the cheapest way to heat a house that could have gas. Where it makes sense is where gas is not available and the alternative is LPG at similar cost, where the property is small and well insulated, where it is paired with solar PV and a time-of-use tariff, or where the space and safety advantages of no combustion outweigh the running cost.
For an off-grid property, the more efficient electric option is usually a heat pump rather than a direct electric boiler, because a heat pump delivers several units of heat per unit of electricity while a resistance element delivers one. Where a heat pump cannot work — a small flat with no external space, for instance — an electric boiler is a reasonable answer.
Hot water can be handled either by an electric combi for a single bathroom, or by a cylinder with an immersion, and the choice follows the same simultaneous-demand logic as any other system.
What the job covers
- Assessment of electrical supply capacity before specifying an appliance
- Sizing to the property's actual heat loss
- Installation, system pipework and controls
- Sealed system conversion, cleaning and inhibitor where replacing an older system
- Coordination with an electrician for the circuit and isolation
- Honest comparison against heat pump and other off-grid options
What it costs
We don't publish a price for this yet, because a number pulled out of the air is worse than no number at all — your plumber has to honour it. You'll get a firm price for your actual job when they ring you back, before any work starts. The quote itself is free and there's no obligation either way.
Common questions
Is an electric boiler expensive to run?
Per unit of heat, yes — typically three to four times the cost of mains gas. It suits small, well-insulated properties, flats without gas, and situations where no combustion appliance is possible.
Electric boiler or heat pump?
Where a heat pump is viable it will use far less electricity for the same heat. An electric boiler makes sense where there is no space or suitability for a heat pump, or where heat demand is very low.
