Air source heat pump installation in Macclesfield

The physics is the appeal. A heat pump moves heat rather than creating it, so for each unit of electricity it uses it can deliver three or four units of heat. That is what makes the running cost competitive despite electricity costing more per unit than gas — and it is also why the design has to be right, because the efficiency falls as the flow temperature rises.

That single fact drives everything else. A gas boiler system runs at 60 to 70°C; a heat pump wants to run at 35 to 45°C. At those temperatures a radiator emits far less heat, so radiators sized for a boiler are usually too small. The survey works out, room by room, what each space loses and what emitter is needed at the design flow temperature — and in a well-insulated house that often means fewer changes than people expect, while in a solid-walled cottage it may mean several.

Hot water is the other half. A heat pump heats a cylinder rather than producing instant hot water, and it needs a cylinder with a large surface area coil designed for low-temperature operation — a standard boiler cylinder will not transfer heat fast enough. Most installations include a new cylinder for exactly that reason.

There is a genuine local case for heat pumps, and it is strongest off the gas grid. DESNZ figures put 40.7% of properties in the Gawsworth and Macclesfield Forest area with no gas connection at all, against 11.6% across Cheshire East. For a house currently running on oil or LPG, the running cost comparison is completely different to a house on mains gas — and those are precisely the properties where a heat pump makes the most sense financially.

The honest caveats. A heat pump needs external space for the unit with adequate airflow, and it makes some noise — modern units are quiet but not silent, and siting matters, particularly on a terraced property with a neighbour's window nearby. Planning permission is usually not required under permitted development, but conservation areas and listed buildings have additional constraints, and Macclesfield has a lot of both. Insulation first is not a slogan: money spent on loft and floor insulation before the pump reduces the size of unit you need and improves everything afterwards.

MCS certification is what makes an installation eligible for Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant funding and is the standard most warranties are written against. Common questions

Do I need to replace all my radiators?

Usually not all of them. The survey identifies which rooms need larger emitters at the design flow temperature — often it is a handful rather than the whole house, particularly where the property is reasonably insulated.

Will it work in an old stone cottage?

It can, but the heat loss is higher so the design has to be honest about it. Insulation improvements first often make the difference between a system that works well and one that struggles.
