Burst pipe repair in Macclesfield

A burst pipe needs the water off before it needs a plumber. Close the internal stopcock, open the cold taps to drain the system, and get the job in as an emergency. Pipes burst for three main reasons, and which one it is tells your plumber a lot before they arrive. Freezing is the classic: water expands as it turns to ice, the pipe splits, and nothing shows until the thaw pushes water out of the split. Corrosion is the slow one, common in older copper and in any system that has been running without inhibitor for years. And mechanical damage — a nail through a joist, a screw into a wall, a pipe knocked while flooring went down — is the one that turns up weeks after somebody else's building work.
The repair depends on what the pipe is and where it runs. A split in accessible copper is cut out and a new section soldered or compression-jointed in, which takes minutes. A failure in plastic barrier pipe under a floor means lifting boards to find both ends of the run. A burst in the underground supply pipe between your boundary and the house is a different job again — usually a new run in MDPE, sometimes moled through rather than dug.
Older housing changes the odds. Central Macclesfield has a high proportion of pre-1919 stock, and those houses have often been re-plumbed piecemeal over a century: lead into iron into copper into plastic, each junction a place where two metals meet and one of them loses. When a plumber finds three generations of pipework in one cupboard, the honest advice is sometimes to replace a length rather than patch a point.
Frost is a genuinely local risk here, and it is not evenly spread. Temperature drops roughly half a degree for every hundred metres of altitude, and the Met Office's own station figures show markedly more air-frost days on the high ground than on the Cheshire plain. A pipe in a loft in Rainow or Kerridge, or up towards Macclesfield Forest, is in a colder place than the same pipe in Broken Cross. Lagging in unheated spaces is the cheapest insurance in plumbing.
After the repair, two things are worth doing. Refill slowly and check every joint on the run, because a system that has been drained and refilled hard will find its next weakest point. And take photographs of the damage before you dry anything out — most home insurance covers escape of water and the cost of finding the leak, but claims are far easier with evidence taken at the time.

Common questions
How do I stop the water while I wait?
Turn the internal stopcock clockwise until it stops — it is most often under the kitchen sink. Then open all the cold taps downstairs to drain the pipework, which stops the remaining water in the system finding the split. If the burst is on a heating pipe rather than the mains, the stopcock will not stop it; close the valves either side of the leak or the ones on the boiler if you can identify them.
Will my insurance cover it?
Most home insurance covers escape of water damage, and many policies also cover trace and access — the cost of finding and getting to the leak. The repair to the failed pipe itself is often excluded. Take photographs before clearing up and keep the invoice.
