Frozen pipes in Macclesfield

Water expands by about nine per cent when it freezes, and a sealed pipe has nowhere to put it. The split usually happens during the freeze but stays sealed by the ice itself, so the flood arrives with the thaw — often while nobody is home. That timing is why an unheated loft or an empty holiday cottage is where the expensive damage happens.
Thawing is done gently and from the tap end backwards. Open the tap the frozen section feeds so meltwater has somewhere to go and pressure cannot build. Then apply gentle heat along the pipe: a hot water bottle, warm damp cloths, a hairdryer on low kept moving. Never use a blowtorch, never pour boiling water on a frozen pipe, and never heat one spot until it is hot — rapid local expansion is itself a way to split a pipe, and a torch near old joists is a fire.
Find where it froze, because that tells you what to fix. Pipes freeze where they are unheated and exposed: loft runs above the insulation, cellar and outbuilding pipework, the run to an outside tap, and the condensate pipe from a condensing boiler where it passes outside. Anything running through an unheated void without lagging is a candidate.
Altitude matters here more than most places. Temperature falls roughly 0.5°C per 100 metres, and the Met Office's regional figures show the difference plainly — Buxton averages 51.5 air-frost days a year against 40.0 at low-lying Woodford. The hills immediately east of Macclesfield are real high ground: Kerridge Hill at 313m, Tegg's Nose at 380m, Shutlingsloe at 506m, Shining Tor at 559m. A pipe in a loft in Rainow or Wildboarclough is in a materially colder place than the same pipe in Hurdsfield.
Prevention is cheap and dull, which is why it rarely gets done until after the first burst. Lag every pipe in an unheated space, including the ones that look too short to matter. Lag the loft tank and its pipework — but never insulate underneath the tank, because the rising heat from the house below is part of what keeps it liquid. Fit an isolating valve on the outside tap supply and drain it before winter. And if the house will be empty in cold weather, either leave the heating on a low setting or drain the system down properly.

Common questions
Can I use boiling water to thaw a pipe?
No. Boiling water on frozen pipework can crack the pipe outright from thermal shock, and on a plastic pipe it can deform it. Use gentle warmth spread along the pipe — a hot water bottle, warm cloths, or a hairdryer kept moving.
My boiler stopped after a frost — is that the same thing?
Usually it is the condensate pipe rather than the water supply. It runs outside to a drain and freezes readily. Thawing it with warm water poured over the external section often brings the boiler straight back. If it keeps happening, the pipe should be re-run internally or upsized.
