Gas pipework installation & alterations in Macclesfield

Gas pipework has to be sized so that every appliance receives its rated pressure with everything running at once, and routed so it is protected, accessible and correctly sleeved where it passes through the structure. Sizing is a calculation, not a habit. The pipe diameter is determined by the total load of the appliances it serves, the length of the run and the number of fittings, so that the pressure drop from the meter to the furthest appliance stays within the permitted limit. A new boiler added to a 15mm run that was sized for a fire and a cooker will underperform and may never make its rated output.

Routing has rules. Gas pipe must be protected where it could be damaged, sleeved and sealed where it passes through walls and floors, ventilated where it runs in a void, and never buried in a wall without proper protection or run through a cavity in a way that could allow gas to accumulate. Pipe under floors should be accessible where possible and marked so a future trade does not put a nail through it.

The most common jobs are extensions of the existing installation: a supply to a new boiler position, a run to a kitchen extension, an outdoor barbecue or fire pit connection, or a new appliance in a converted garage. Each starts with a check of the existing installation's capacity — the meter's rating, the size of the run from it, and the total load once the new appliance is added.

Every alteration ends with a tightness test on the whole installation and a check of the working pressure at each appliance. That is the proof the job is sound, and it is why gas work always takes a little longer than the pipe run itself suggests.

Corrugated stainless steel tube and other modern systems have their place, but they need the manufacturer's fittings and training. Traditional copper and threaded steel remain the norm for most domestic work, and either is fine when sized, routed and tested correctly.

Common questions

Why does my new boiler need bigger gas pipe?

Because the existing run was sized for whatever was there before. A modern boiler at full output needs a certain gas rate, and if the pipe cannot deliver it at the right pressure, the appliance will not reach its rated performance.

Can gas pipe run under a floor?

Yes, with the right protection, ventilation of the void, and ideally accessibility for future inspection. What it must not do is sit unprotected where it can be damaged, or run in a sealed cavity where gas could accumulate.
