The distinction between this and a powerflush is force. A chemical cleanse relies on the system's own pump and a cleaning agent left to circulate — typically for a few hours, sometimes over several days on a slow cleanse — before the system is drained, refilled and inhibited. There is no high-velocity pump unit and no radiator-by-radiator reversal.
That makes it the appropriate choice in specific situations: a relatively clean system being prepared for a new boiler, an older installation where high-velocity flushing risks disturbing fragile pipework or perforating already-corroded radiators, microbore systems where a powerflush may not be effective anyway, and situations where cost is the deciding factor.
It is also the standard pre-commissioning step on new installations. New pipework carries flux, swarf, jointing compound and general debris, and BS 7593 expects a new or altered system to be cleaned and dosed with inhibitor before it is handed over. Skipping that on a new system is how a brand-new heat exchanger gets blocked in its first year.
The honest limitation is that a chemical cleanse cannot remove what is physically settled in the base of a radiator. It lifts and suspends what the chemical can reach and what the flow can carry, and heavy magnetite deposits will stay where they are. On a badly fouled system it is a partial measure, and saying so is more useful than selling it as a full solution.
Whatever the method, the job finishes the same way: correct inhibitor dose, a magnetic filter where there is not one, and a note of the concentration so the level can be checked at the next service.
