Magnetic filter installation in Macclesfield

In short

A magnetic filter sits on the return pipe to the boiler and catches magnetite continuously, so the debris that would otherwise reach the heat exchanger and the pump ends up in a cannister you empty at each service. Most boiler manufacturers now require one for the warranty.

Also called: magnaclean fitting · system filter · boiler filter installation · magnetic sludge filter

The device is simple: a chamber containing a powerful magnet in the flow path, positioned on the return to the boiler so it catches debris before it enters the appliance. Each service, the cannister is isolated, opened and cleaned out, and what comes out is a good indicator of the system's condition.

The reason it matters is what modern heat exchangers look like inside. Waterways in a condensing boiler are narrow — that is how they extract so much heat — and they block readily. A pump's bearings are equally unforgiving of an abrasive slurry. A filter costs a fraction of either component and removes the mechanism that destroys both.

Manufacturers have caught up with this. Most now specify a filter as a condition of the extended warranties they offer, and installations without one are a common reason for a claim being questioned. If a new boiler is being fitted, the filter goes on as part of the job.

Placement matters. It goes on the return, as close to the boiler as practical, in a position where it can actually be serviced without dismantling half a cupboard. A filter fitted somewhere unreachable will never be emptied, which makes it decorative.

It is not a substitute for cleaning a dirty system. Fitting a filter to a system full of magnetite catches what circulates but does not remove what has settled in radiator bases. The correct sequence is clean first, filter second, inhibit third — and then the filter keeps it that way.

What the job covers

  • Filter fitted on the return, in a serviceable position
  • Isolation valves so it can be cleaned without draining the system
  • System condition assessment and cleaning recommendation
  • Cleaning out at each annual service
  • Inhibitor dosing at the same time
  • Advice on what the captured debris says about your system

What it costs

We don't publish a price for this yet, because a number pulled out of the air is worse than no number at all — your plumber has to honour it. You'll get a firm price for your actual job when they ring you back, before any work starts. The quote itself is free and there's no obligation either way.

Common questions

Do I really need a magnetic filter?

If you have a modern condensing boiler, effectively yes — most manufacturers require one for the warranty, and the narrow waterways in the heat exchanger are exactly what magnetite blocks.

How often does it need emptying?

Annually, at the boiler service. On a system that has recently been flushed it will catch a lot in the first year, then progressively less.
