The system is simple in principle: collectors on the roof — flat plate or evacuated tube — heat a glycol mixture, which passes through the lower coil of a twin-coil cylinder and transfers heat to the stored water. The boiler or immersion heats the upper part of the cylinder when the sun has not done enough, so you always have hot water.

Output follows the season, and honesty about that matters. Through summer, a well-sized system will provide most or all of a household's hot water. In midwinter in Cheshire it provides a useful pre-heat rather than a full load — raising the incoming water temperature so the boiler has less work to do. The cylinder is not optional. A solar system needs a twin-coil cylinder with the solar coil low down, because that is where the coldest water sits and where the modest solar temperatures can still do useful work. If you have a single-coil cylinder, replacing it is part of the job.

Roof considerations are practical: orientation between south-east and south-west, a pitch in a workable range, minimal shading through the middle of the day, and structural capacity for the collectors.
