There is a real local reason this service exists. Common faults are recognisable. A boiler that locks out on start-up usually has a fuel supply problem — air in the line, a blocked filter, or water in the tank from condensation. And a boiler that runs but heats poorly often has a heat exchanger caked with soot, which is a symptom of skipped servicing.
Oil boilers can be as efficient as gas ones when condensing models are fitted and set up correctly, but they are less forgiving of neglect. The annual service is not optional maintenance for an oil appliance; it is the thing that keeps it working.
