Cold radiator diagnosis in Macclesfield

Start by feeling the radiator methodically — top, bottom, both ends — and then feel both pipes at the valves. The pattern is diagnostic. Hot at the bottom and cold at the top means air trapped at the high point, which bleeding releases. Hot at the top and cold along the bottom means magnetite sludge has settled in the base of the radiator and water is short-circuiting across the top.
A radiator cold all over while both its pipes are hot points at the valves: usually a thermostatic valve with a seized pin, occasionally a lockshield closed by a previous decorator and never reopened. Take the TRV head off and press the pin — if it does not spring back, that is your fault found.
A radiator cold all over with cool pipes means flow is not reaching it. That is balance, a pump that is failing or set too low, a partially closed valve upstream, a blocked pipe run, or a zone valve that is not opening. Systems that heat downstairs but not upstairs, or one zone but not another, usually have a zone valve or wiring centre issue rather than a boiler fault.
Sludge deserves its own note, because it is the most common underlying cause and the most commonly misdiagnosed. Steel radiators corrode internally and produce magnetite — a black magnetic sludge that settles in the base of radiators, blocks narrow heat exchanger passages and abrades pump bearings. It is not limescale: Macclesfield's water is soft, well below the level at which scale forms, so anyone here attributing your cold radiators to limescale is describing a problem this town does not have.
The fix follows the diagnosis, and it ranges from a two-minute bleed to a full powerflush and inhibitor dose. What matters is that it is diagnosed first, because flushing a system whose actual fault is a seized valve is an expensive way to leave the room cold.
