Radiator balancing & bleeding in Macclesfield

The distinction matters because people bleed radiators that do not need it. Air rises, so an air-locked radiator is hot at the bottom and cold across the top. A radiator that is cool all over, or noticeably cooler than the others, has a flow problem — either balance, a seized valve, or sludge. And a radiator cold at the bottom and hot at the top has sludge lying in it, which bleeding will not touch.
Balancing is done with the lockshield valve — the one with the plastic cap, usually opposite the thermostatic valve. The system is run up to temperature and the temperature drop across each radiator is measured, and the lockshields adjusted so every radiator drops by a similar amount, typically around 10 to 12 degrees between flow and return. Radiators close to the boiler get throttled, distant ones opened, and the result is a system that heats evenly.
It is genuinely worth doing rather than being sold. An unbalanced system has the boiler running longer to satisfy the coldest room while the near rooms overheat, and on a condensing boiler it also pushes return temperatures up, which reduces efficiency. Nobody notices because a house that has always heated unevenly just seems normal.
Air keeps arriving in some systems, and that is a symptom rather than a nuisance. Regular air means either a leak drawing air in on the suction side, a pump position or speed drawing air over the vent, or corrosion generating hydrogen inside the system — the last one is the sign of untreated water and a system that needs cleaning and inhibiting.
Bleeding drops the system pressure, so on a sealed system the gauge should be checked and topped back to around 1.2 bar cold afterwards.

Common questions
How often should I bleed my radiators?
Once a year at the start of the heating season is plenty for a healthy system. If you are bleeding the same radiator every few weeks, air is getting in or being generated, and that needs investigating rather than repeating.
Is balancing something I can do myself?
It can be, with a thermometer and patience, but it takes a couple of hours and a methodical approach. Most people find it is a job worth handing over, particularly on a large system.
