The advantage over air source is stability. Air temperature swings from -5°C to 20°C across a year and heat pump efficiency falls as the source gets colder — exactly when demand is highest. Ground temperature at a few metres depth stays close to 10°C all year, so a ground source system delivers consistent performance in the coldest weather, with a better seasonal efficiency overall.
The cost is in the ground works. A horizontal collector needs a substantial area of land — typically a few hundred square metres of trenched or slinky loop for a domestic system — while a vertical borehole needs far less area but requires drilling, which is the expensive part. Which is viable depends entirely on the site: geology, access for a rig, and how much land you have.
That makes it a realistic option for a specific kind of property around here: a farmhouse, a converted barn or a rural house with land, off the gas grid, where the alternative is oil or LPG. In the town itself, with terraced and semi-detached housing on small plots, air source is almost always the practical answer instead.
The house-side design is the same discipline as air source, and just as important. Low flow temperature means correctly sized emitters, a heat-pump-rated cylinder with a large coil, and good controls with weather compensation. Underfloor heating pairs particularly well, which is why ground source and underfloor so often appear together in new build and full renovation projects.
Ground loops themselves are long-lived — the pipework is expected to last decades with no maintenance — so most of the servicing attention goes to the heat pump unit, the circulating pumps and the controls. That longevity is part of the economic case: the expensive element is also the part that does not wear out.
MCS certification applies here as it does to air source, and it is what makes the installation eligible for Boiler Upgrade Scheme funding.
