Radiator sludge & cold spots in Macclesfield

The pattern is diagnostic and reliable. Air rises, so an air-locked radiator is cold at the top. Sludge sinks, so a sludged radiator is cold at the bottom — often with a distinct horizontal line you can feel with your hand, above which it is hot and below which it is not. The deeper that cold band, the more debris is sitting in there.
In a badly affected system, several radiators show it, the water is black when bled, and the boiler may be noisy or short cycling because its heat exchanger is fouled too. In a mildly affected one, it may be a single radiator on the end of a run where the flow has always been weakest.
For one or two radiators, the direct approach works: isolate, remove, flush out thoroughly outside, refit and rebalance. It is messy — the water is genuinely black and will stain anything it touches — but it is effective and cheap for an isolated case.
Where several radiators are affected, treating them individually is a losing game, because the system as a whole is producing the debris. That is a powerflush case, followed by a magnetic filter and inhibitor to stop the cycle restarting.
One radiator worth checking separately: a towel rail or a radiator that has been off for a long period. Debris settles in anything stagnant, and a radiator that has been valved off through a decorating project or a spare room's disuse can be substantially blocked when it is turned back on.

Common questions
Can I flush one radiator myself?
It is doable — isolate both valves, take it off, and flush it outside with a hose. Be warned that the water is black, stains permanently, and there is always more of it than expected.
Will one flushed radiator fix the system?
Only if it is the only one affected. Where several show cold bottoms and the water runs black, the system is producing the debris and needs cleaning as a whole.
