Heat pumps are reliable, but they lose performance quietly rather than failing loudly. A coil clogged with leaves and dust, a fan restricted by planting that has grown up around the unit, a strainer partly blocked, or a system running at a higher flow temperature than it needs — none of those stop the heat pump working, they just make it use more electricity for the same heat.
The service covers both sides. Air side: coil cleaning, fan and airflow, defrost operation, drainage from the unit. Water side: system pressure, flow rate, strainer and filter condition, glycol concentration where used, expansion vessel charge, and the cylinder's performance. Then the refrigerant circuit is checked for correct operating pressures and temperatures, which is what reveals a slow leak before it becomes a failure.
The controls review is the part that most often finds free efficiency. Heat pumps are frequently commissioned on default settings and then never revisited — a weather compensation curve that is too steep, a flow temperature set 10°C higher than the house needs, hot water reheating at the wrong time of day, or a schedule that turns the system off and on as though it were a boiler. Correcting those can make a measurable difference to running cost without touching the hardware.
Common faults are recognisable. Poor heating output usually means either water-side flow restriction or an over-restricted air path. Frequent defrost cycling in mild damp weather can be normal, but excessive defrosting suggests a control or refrigerant issue. Noise changes point at the fan or the compressor mounts. And a system that has lost pressure needs the same investigation as any sealed heating system.
Where the unit is under a manufacturer's warranty, annual servicing by a competent engineer is usually a condition of it — and with heat pumps representing a significant investment, that is worth keeping intact.
